Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences

Incorporating multiple intelligences into the classroom requires a teacher to be a little creative. Howard Gardner, a professor at Harvard University, originally came up with seven intelligences. He has since added an eighth. They are Linguistic, Logical-mathematical, Musical, Spatial, Bodily-kinesthetic, Interpersonal, Intrapersonal and Naturalistic. In the article “Multiple Intelligences: A Theory for Everyone” there is an overview of each intelligence area.

There is also a section called “Implementing Gardner’s Theory in the Classroom”. This section is about how to incorporate the 8 intelligences into the curriculum. Many students will benefit from lessons that incorporate more than one intelligence area. This article elaborates on lesson design, interdisciplinary units, student projects, assessments, and apprenticeships. The article can be found on the Education World website. This site has many resources for teachers.
